Mobile Credentials

Mobile Credentials are based on the ISO/IEC 18013-5:2021 standard. They are digital identity documents designed to be stored on the holder’s mobile device. Mobile Credentials support a variety of advanced security features, making them an ideal choice for use cases requiring higher assurance identity credentials, such as driving licenses or national IDs.

Mobile Credentials are designed to be stored on a mobile device in a mobile wallet, allowing for a more secure binding between the mobile device and the credential, as well as a tighter native integration with iOS and Android. This means credential presentation methods can leverage close proximity technologies such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).

The following sub-sections detail the standards and technology which Mobile Credentials are based on, as well as the key capabilities they offer in the MATTR VII platform:

  • Core Capabilities: Reviews the core capabilities available for Mobile Credentials, setting the ground for the following subsections who explain how these capabilities are enabled.

  • Standards and Technology: Describes the ISO/IEC standards Mobile Credentials are based on, as well as some key concepts and technologies that would help you better understand Mobile Credentials.

  • Chain of Trust: Explains the series of certificates that are used to sign Mobile Credentials, making them highly secure and reliable.

  • Communication Protocol: Explains the architecture and protocols that enable the holder’s and the verifier’s devices to establish a verification workflow.

  • From Structure to Function: Reviews the structure of Mobile Credentials and Mobile Credentials Presentations, and how that structure enables the key functionalities offered by Mobile Credentials.

  • Mobile Credentials across MATTR Platforms: Introduces key capabilities that are available across MATTR platforms to embed Mobile Credentials into your ecosystem.
